The way regional newspapers are embracing new technology is the subject of a new series on Radio 4 presented by former Press Gazette editor Philippa Kennedy.
The first part of Read All About It looks at the business aspects of regional journalism and the drive towards using different media platforms.
Kennedy said: “It’s all about ‘reach’ these days rather than circulation. We visited the MEN and Kent on Sunday, both firing on all cylinders on the net, radio and TV.
“By contrast, [we visited] The Sunday Independent in Liskeard [in Cornwall] where they are taking it much more slowly and don’t even have a website yet.
“I was on the Mirror training scheme down in Plymouth and the Sunday Independent was the flagship paper, so it was a case of retracing my own journalistic footsteps.”
Kennedy visited a number of regional papers around the country including The Argus in Brighton.
The second programme looks at the practical skills needed to be a regional newspaper journalist today – and includes a visit to see the PA training scheme in Howden, Yorkshire.
The programme goes out at 8pm on Thursday 8 and 15 November.
