Former Sheffield Star editor John Furbisher has been appointed head of media for the Conservative Party group at the European Parliament.
Furbisher resigned from the Star in April after 15 months as editor. Before joining the Star he was editor of the Evening Courier in Halifax for six years, and before that he was deputy editor of the Yorkshire Post and northern correspondent at the Sunday Times.
In his new role Furbisher will be based in Brussels and will help ‘shape regional and national media strategy for the Conservative leadership and MEPs”.
He takes up the new role next month.
‘Politics was my first love in journalism, so this is the perfect opportunity to deploy the skills and experience I built up in newspapers in a fresh and challenging arena,’he said.
‘Our Conservative MEPs are part of a new and exciting grouping in Brussels and they’ll be campaigning strongly on key issues that affect us all.
‘I’m looking forward to joining them and getting stuck in to put across their important message.”
