• British Press Awards: Book your table
Liberal Democrat deputy leader and shadow chancellor Vince Cable has today been announced as guest of honour at this year’s Press Gazette British Press Awards.
The Twickenham MP, who has been the party’s chief economics spokesman since 2003, will speak at the awards dinner at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on 31 March.
He will present the ‘premier awards’ of newspaper of the year, journalist of the year and international journalist of the year.
The shortlists for the journalist and international journalist categories were published yesterday. There is no shortlist for the newspaper of the year award.
Some 540 entries were received for this year’s British Press Awards – the same as last year – and all the national newspaper groups are taking part.
The winners in each category will be decided after a second-stage judging day involving five-member juries made of two representatives from the national press, two independent judges and one regional newspaper editor.
The chairman of judges this year is Society of Editors executive director Bob Satchwell.
