Sun managing editor Stig Abell is set to replace Peter Stothard as editor of the Times Literary Supplement.
Stothard has been in the job for 14 years, since stepping down as Times editor, and is 64. Abell has been managing editor at The Sun for two and a half years and previously worked in PR and for the Press Complaints Commission.
The TLS has sales of 25,000 a week, down by around 10,000 over the last decade.
More details on the changes at the TLS are expected to be announced next week.
The TLS – like The Sun, Times and Sunday Times – is owned by News UK (part of the News Corp empire).
