Collins receiving her award from Hiberian footballer Orman
Nan Spowart of the Daily Record has won this year’s Epilepsy Scotland award for a feature about Liz Collins, who was locked up for suffering from the disease.
Runner-up was Lorna MacLaren for an article in The Herald about a child who suffered from epilepsy. Novelist Christopher Brookmyre, who was on the judging panel, said: “Spowart wrote a powerful piece that uses a shocking story to convey important information and also highlight our ignorance of epilepsy.” Spowart received her award from Hibs footballer and epilepsy sufferer Alen Orman. She said: “This really should go to Liz Collins who was so courageous in telling me her story. I am thrilled that her words reached such an audience who might otherwise have never given epilepsy a thought.”
