The UK-based coroner heading the inquest into the death of James Miller, the British journalist killed by Israeli soldiers while filming in Gaza a year ago, has requested two Metropolitan Police detectives to investigate his death.
Dr Andrew Reid has asked them to conduct a two-pronged investigation in the UK and Israel. Miller’s widow Sophy has asked foreign secretary Jack Straw to urge the Israeli authorities “to cooperate fully” with the Met officer’s investigations. She has also asked him to take action to ensure that any flaws in the original Israeli command enquiry into James’s death “do not compromise the current Military Police Investigation.
She listed the failure of investigators to take forensics at the scene, the absence of an IDF photographer at the autopsy and the failure to secure the guns involved in the killing until eleven weeks after the incident, as having compromised the original investigation.
Following her meeting with the Israeli Defence Force and government advisers earlier this month, she said the IDF admitted its initial investigation immediately following Miller’s death was flawed.
