Irish newspaper Lá (Day) has marked its first month as a daily by picking up the top award at the annual Irish-language media awards.
Produced by a 10-strong team with headquarters in Belfast, the Irish-language paper is on course to hit its sales target of 5,000 copies, says editor Ciarán O’Pronntaigh.
“Response to the paper from readers nationwide has been uniformly positive,” he said. “We’re turning out 12 pages a day, five days a week, but have every intention of growing as support for the venture builds.
“This is the only daily newspaper in a Celtic language, but across Europe, there are over 50 dailies produced in ‘minority languages’ – including papers in Basque, Catalan and Slovene – which sell between them over one million copies.”
Managing editor Mairtin O’Muilleoir this week met a Welsh publisher who has advanced plans for launching a Welsh-language daily.
Previously a weekly, Lá relaunched in daily format on 28 April after raising £50,000 through a share issue. It is backed by both the Irish and British Governments.
