If you thought there was anything new under the sun, consider this,
from a Rutland and Stamford Mercury story now on display to the public,
along with other items from the paper’s 300 years of history, thanks to
£300,000 of lottery money.
“The disgraceful scene of a fellow’s
selling and delivering his wife was exhibited in Stamford market on
Friday last. The price obtained was four shillings!”
It’s the story that is said to have inspired a scene from Thomas Hardy’s classic novel, The Mayor of Casterbridge.
Three centuries later, what do we find on the front of the nation’s biggest newspaper and newlycrowned Newspaper of the Year?
Mum sells her baby to the News of the World.
