Former BBC economics correspondent, Steve Schifferes, has been appointed as the first professor of financial journalism at City University London’s Graduate School of Journalism.
He will work with the university to create a new MA in financial journalism, the first of its kind in England and Wales.
Schifferes is best-known as producer for the BBC’s Money Programme and has also co-ordinated several big stories for BBC News Online including the credit crunch, the Enron scandal and the G20 summit in London.
He said the university’s links to both the media industry and the City of London would help the next generation of journalists understand financial issues.
Schifferes will become the Majorie Deane professor of financial journalism after a foundation was established in memory of the former Economist journalist.
Deane, who died last year, had a foundation established in her name in 1998 to promote excellence in financial journalism.
Schifferes’ appointment follows the appointment in July of former Times international editor George Brock as the new director of journalism at City University.
