Roger Ryan has been appointed sports editor of The Standard in Hong Kong.
It is his sixth appointment in the Far East since 1994, having worked on the old Hong Kong Standard, the South China Morning Post and the now defunct Hong Kong iMail.
Before taking up his new post, he designed the MetroNews/Sports section of The Standard, which was launched in February.
A former Daily Mail sports sub, Ryan began his career with the Gravesend and Dartford Reporter, becoming the paper’s youngest sports editor in 1977 and editor of the group’s Leader series of free newspapers in 1985.
After going freelance, he was launch chief sub of the North Kent Weekly News while undertaking casual subbing shifts on several nationals.
He joined the Daily Mail sports desk on a permanent basis in 1988, before returning to freelancing, during which time he was launch associate editor (sport) of the Croydon Times, Croydon District Times and Streatham & Dulwich Times and redesigned the sports pages of the Kentish Times series.
He moved to Hong Kong in 1994, staying until just before the 1997 handover of the former British colony to China, and returned in August 1998.
