Local and regional newspaper editors across the UK are preparing for Local Newspaper Week, which this year celebrates the campaigning power of local media.
Kicking off next week (5-11 May), local and regional papers will draw attention to their campaigning work through a variety of competitions, supplements, features and online initiatives.
One weekly title – the West Sussex County Times – is celebrating Local Newspaper Week specifically through its website, with a special video.
Editor-in-chief Gary Shipton said: ‘We decided to celebrate the week not in print but with a special video report on our website, looking behind the scenes at how our own broadsheet newspaper has extended itself into what the industry terms a multiplatform community media company.
‘We’ll be taking a look at the reporters at work behind the camera and how we prepare stories for the website. as well as the newspaper – and we’re hoping to include some It’ll Be Alright on the Night-style out-takes of our own team at work.”
Other local and regional papers are focusing on their campaigning work from the past year. The Newark Advertiser will produce a four-page supplement highlighting its recent campaign to save the smallest school in the area from closure, and the Birmingham Mail will highlight campaigns such as Save Our Shops in Monday’s shopping supplement.
