A Yorkshire journalist who was given months to live after being diagnosed with leukaemia has been given the all-clear.
Adrian Sudbury, 25, from Nottingham, is considering a return to the industry after recovering from a successful bone marrow transplant in July.
Sudbury had been appointed web editor at the Huddersfield Examiner just two days before feeling unwell and being diagnosed with the bone marrow disease. Doctors said that if he had not gone to the hospital that day, he may have died within two weeks.
He told Press Gazette: ‘This is the best possible news. Now I can get on with my life.
‘I think we are all a bit misled by TV and soaps – you expect some champagne cork-popping moment but it’s not how it feels. You are just drained and you realise there are other things you have to do.”
Sudbury wrote about his condition and treatment at Sheffield General Infirmary throughout the past year. He posted informative pieces on his Baldy Blog, so called due to his loss of hair through chemotherapy.
The blog was hosted on the Examiner website and proved to be one of site’s most popular features.
Sudbury also presented several pieces to camera for his blog in which he described the transplant process and updated readers on his progress.
‘I come from a science background and I thought the blog was a good chance to write about the disease and present it in a more digestible way. I hope that’s what I’ve done,’he said.
