The deadline for applications to replace the outgoing general secretary of the National Union of Journalists falls this week – signalling the start of the election process.
Jeremy Dear fired the starting gun on the first NUJ leadership race for a decade by revealing in February that he was to stand down after serving as general secretary for two terms.
Dear, was elected as the union’s youngest ever leader in 2001, is expected to step down in the summer once a successor has been appointed.
Those wishing to replace Dear have until tomorrow to submit applications. Ballot papers will then go to NUJ members on April 26, with the vote closing on May 24. The result of the election is due to be declared on May 27.

The deadline for applications to become general secretary comes ahead of the three-day NUJ Delegate Meeting that begins in Southport on Friday.
Delegates from branches across the union will discuss more than 150 motions and determine NUJ policy for the future.
