A new category reflecting the growing demand for health journalism is to be introduced at this year’s British Press Awards.
Health Writer of the Year will be open to specialist health writers who work for national newspapers, supplements or magazines.
Reporters, feature writers, editors and columnists are all eligible to apply for the new award, whether they are writing on the needs of consumers or on the health industry.
Nick Foster, of IVAX Pharmaceut-icals, sponsors of the new category, said: "Health is the topic of the moment, from anthrax to general fitness, everyone is interested and we are delighted to sponsor the new award. As newspapers get bigger and bigger, editors are focusing increasingly on the quality of life and health is a prime concern of most people."
Presentation of the awards will take place at a dinner at the London Hilton in Park Lane on Tuesday, 19 March 2002.
There are 24 categories, including the new health category, with separate sections for feature writer and interviewer of the year and for sports writer and sports reporter.
A panel of 80 judges will be drawn from the nationals and judging will take place in February.
Entry forms will be available soon from Angie Reid on 020 8565 4392 or by e-mail on angier@qpp.co.uk. They will also go out in Press Gazette in two weeks’ time.
