Robin Young has departed the Belfast-based Community Telegraph series of free weeklies to take up the editorship of the Northern Constitution in County Derry.
Young started out as a proofreader on the Peterborough Evening Telegraph. Between 1975 and 1976 he had a spell abroad editing the Athens Daily Post and after working as a sub on several titles he moved to crime reporting before returning to Ulster 17 years ago.
As his first priority for the Constitution, Young intends to give the two-section broadsheet a more modern, modular layout while attempting to retain its character, developed over 150 years.
He also hopes to increase circulation in the rural parts of the county by building coverage of agriculture, environmental and community issues.
He said: “My family has been getting the Constitution ever since my grandmother moved to the Limavady area in 1915. Taking over as editor is a tremendous opportunity to restore the paper to its role as the main county paper.”
