Sunday Mercury photographer Sam Bagnall won the Barclaycard Premiership Shot of the Season award for a photograph taken during Aston Villa’s away game at Southampton last season. His entry was a shot of Villa striker Darius Vassell tussling for the ball with Saints full-back Wayne Bridge. Birmingham-based Bagnall picked up a magnum of champagne and £5,000 of camera equipment for his award-winning entry. His fourth success in recent months, he scooped the Trinity Mirror News Picture of The Year for his shot of England football fans jumping between the tops of double-decker buses after the World Cup win against Denmark. In the Banks’s Photographic Awards he was runner-up for News and Sports Photographer of the Year.
