Questions are being raised over the apparently vast expenses budget at the Edinburgh Evening News.
Swept away in the tide of euphoria shared by some 20,000 Scotland fans after their football team’s unlikely 1-0 victory against the French national side in Paris last Wednesday, newshound Adam Morris was quoted in the paper saying: “I am going to buy everyone in the newsroom a drink to celebrate.â€
Morris had managed to bag a ticket to the match and was phoning in some quotes describing what it was like to be on the front line with the Tartan Army when he made the generous offer.
But former EEN journalist turned PR man Stephen Rafferty thinks there could be something else at play.
He said on his blog: “Now, I’m not suggesting for one minute that a newspaper would ‘dress up’ a quote and I’m sure my ex-boss, news editor John McLellan, wouldn’t approve, but have the reporters’ expenses really gone up that much since I worked there three years ago?â€
