The Press in York brokered a deal with a private hospital which could help to save a man's eyesight.
NHS bosses told Les Howard he would lose his sight before he could be given the relevant injections after he was diagnosed with an age-related macular degeneration in one eye and a condition in the other which threatened his ability to see.
But as a result of a special deal struck by The Press, Howard has been offered free treatment at a private hospital which would usually cost between £700 and £1,000 per injection.
The cost of the treatment, which will include up to eight injections in Howard's eyes, will be met by Nuffield hospital, to stop the advance of his condition.
Howard told the paper: "I could cry with joy. I thank The Press enormously – thank you very much indeed for all that you've done. I'm so pleased about it all."
