TopGear.com wins consumer site of the year

BBC Worldwide's TopGear.com won the consumer website of the year award at the AOP Online Publishing Awards last night.

The judges described the site as "perfectly targeting an audience that is expanding at an incredible rate".

The awards, run by the UK Association of Online Publishers, are now in their fifth year. Around 800 guests attended last night's ceremony at the London Hilton.

Associated Northcliffe Digital, which publishes a network of 85 web sites including DailyMail.co.uk and the ThisIs sites associated with Northcliffe regional newspapers, took the Consumer Online Publisher of the year award.

Guardian Unlimited won best Consumer Editorial Team for its blog, CommentIsFree. The Guardian also took home the award for best Online Advertising Sales Team.

Gazetteers.com, an online resource for UK travel agencies published by Reed Business Information, won the for Business Website 2006.

Independent publisher E-Consultancy won two awards: Online Publisher – Business, and Editorial Team – Business, both for E-consultancy.com.

NME.com, published by IPC Ignite!, won the AOP Chairman's Award 2006. The new AOP chairman, Simon Waldman of Guardian Media Group, said NME.com had been "among the first magazine brands to make the digital ‘leap' a decade ago and had held its own throughout".

The Nature Publishing Group won the award for best Use of New Digital Platform, for an online feature about the spread of the avian flu virus that used Google Earth.

The Sun Online won an award for its commercial partnership with Tombola for the launch of SunBingo.co.uk.
