The Observer’s new business editor, Ruth Sunderland, has said she will focus on big themes such as energy issues, pension provision and developing markets when she takes over the role after the summer.
Sunderland, currently deputy City editor on the Daily Mail, will replace Frank Kane, who is launching a daily business paper in Dubai, after five years on The Observer.
Sunderland told Press Gazette: “It’s an incredibly fast-moving world for business and the City. But there have also been some big themes this year, which I would expect to continue at The Observer. We will obviously be looking at developing markets such as China, and issues around oil and energy are also hugely important.” Sunderland added: “Another important theme is that of pension provision and how, as an ageing population, we are all going to provide for our retirement.
I’ve done lots of work on stories like the Equitable Life crisis, when hundreds of thousands of people lost part of their pensions.” Before joining the Mail, Sunderland was business editor of The Mail on Sunday and chief City correspondent of the Daily Express.
