The Press in York has shown that early edition regional papers can react to late-breaking news, by rushing out an on-the-day special after severe storms hit Yorkshire.
Thunderstorms at 7.30am last Friday caused disruption to rail and road networks and left hundreds of commuters stranded. The paper called staff in early to produce 8,000 copies of a late edition at 11.30am, with five fresh pages of content that hit newsstands in time for lunchtime trade. This was on top of its usual 4.30am run of 37,000.
Kevin Booth, editor of The Press, said: "We proved that when there has been a local story of big enough impact, we've made the changes and produced a special late edition to give readers the stories."
