Group editor of the Richmond & Twickenham Times series Malcolm Richards – now the longest-serving editor in London – plans a “gigantic” reunion party to mark his 26 years in the job.
Richards, who continued at the paper when Newsquest took it over from the Dimblebys two years ago, succeeded Reginald Ward in 1977. The Richmond & Twickenham Times has only had five editors in its 130-year history.
The party is being held on 22 March in the Old Print Works in Richmond – a building awaiting demolition. Any former member of the editorial team is invited to attend. The party will start at noon and continue until midnight.
Richards, who retires at the end of April, said: “I have been threatening to hold a reunion ever since I passed the 20 years mark. There is nothing like retirement for focusing the mind.
“It should be a fun occasion – we are expecting hundreds of people during the course of the day, which is why we are allowing 12 hours. As well as the countless journalists who have passed through – many now in top jobs in radio, television and national papers – and MPs, councillors and community leaders, the Dimbleby family and even the Mayor of Richmond have promised to attend.
“It will be completely informal – no carpets, chandeliers or speeches. Just a chance to catch up with old friends.
“The Old Print Works is due for demolition, but it is warm and watertight. It will be very nostalgic and mark the end of an era.”
