Tom McGowran has resigned as chief executive of Tindle Newspapers after 23 years with the company, writes Mary Stevens.
He will be joining another family-owned newspaper group in an advisory role and said the move re?ected his desire to spend more time with his family and enjoy other interests.
“In this job I drive 40,000-odd miles around the country each year. This will allow me to spend more time with my wife and family,” he said.
McGowran started his career as a photographer with Johnston Press in 1966, but quickly moved across into advertising sales.
“The money was better,” he said.
“Photographers in those days only earned about £4 a week.”
He worked for several other companies including Westminster Press and IPC before joining Tindle in February 1980 as general manager. At this point the group owned ?ve titles – it now owns around 120.
McGowran said he has seen huge technological changes during his time at Tindle. “There were still some companies using hot metal. There’s also been a huge change between management and the workforce. We can work as a team now.”
He leaves the group in late September and takes up his new post at the beginning of October.
