A reporter who worked at the Herts Advertiser for nearly 70 years has died at the age of 86.
Beryl Carrington worked under eight of the Advertiser’s 12 editors.
Her
family’s connection goes back even further, with her father Harry
becoming chief reporter in 1896. Her brother also worked on the paper
as did her nephew, who moved to the Gulf as a press officer.
After
retiring, Beryl Carrington continued to work a few days a week for the
Advertiser until a year ago and she also co-authored three books,
including a history of the Herts Red Cross.
Editor Noel Cantillon said her death “marked the end of an era for the paper”.
He
said: “She was like an encyclopaedia for us on St Albans and the
history of this paper. There are not many other people who have such a
history with their paper, especially these days.”
Carrington died suddenly at her home on 11 March.
A full obituary will appear next week.
