The Prince of Wales has praised local newspapers as a “vital part of our communities”, which ensured good work done by people across the country did not go unreported.
The Prince was speaking at a meeting with regional newspaper editors after opening the Press Association’s new operations centre in Howden, East Yorkshire.
He said of regional newspapers: “They are a vital part of our local communities, in helping to foster a sense of place and belonging and also in ensuring that the countless good things being done by people in their local areas do not go unreported.”
The Press Association has just completed its £5m complex in Howden, which produces a range of services from sports news to television listings and employs about 500 people.
Prince Charles toured a number of departments, stopping at one point to examine photographs taken of him just minutes before. He also congratulated the Press Association for its help with the conservation of a medieval window in Howden Minster. As he left the building, he joked to a woman grabbing a quick photograph of him: “You’ll certainly get some great tips on pictures from in there.”
