Daily Record senior management has made a U-turn on plans to close its Aberdeen and Dundee branch offices as part of an economy drive.
The move was presented as a fait accompli to staff, who were told the Aberdeen office would close in six weeks and Dundee four weeks later, and they would work from home.
Shocked staff immediately decided to protest to editor Peter Cox.
Aberdeen bureau chief Bob Dow, reporter Charlie Gall and sports writer Alan McCabe and Dundee bureau chief Brian McCartney and reporter James Moncur met with Cox and managing editor Malcolm Speed. Cox immediately went to see senior management and returned to report the proposal had been summarily binned.
A Daily Record insider told Press Gazette: “Thank goodness Peter Cox had the sense to see that the proposal was a nonsense.”
