Recognition for Iraqi freelances

By Press Gazette

Iraqi freelance news cameramen have been recognised for their their “outstanding but largely unheralded” contribution to TV news.

The Mohamed Amin Award, supported by Reuters, was dedicated to them at the News Xchange Conference in Portugal at the weekend.

Tony Donovan, managing director of Reuters TV, said: “These journalists work under constant threat, often mistrusted by their own communities and facing personal risk everyday.

“Despite this they remain committed to telling the story. This was the case for Dhia Najim, a vital part of Reuters team in Iraq who was tragically killed recently. He is greatly missed.”

The award was presented to Rodney Pinder, director of the International News Safety Institute, and the £1,000 prize will support his work improving safety for journalists worldwide.
