The Sunday Telegraph has recruited Evening Standard political correspondent Patrick Hennessy to be its new political editor.
The move follows Standard editor Veronica Wadley’s decision to replace political editor Charles Reiss, who retires this month, with Whitehall editor Joe Murphy.
Hennessy, who has been with the Standard for eight years, had been tipped as a successor to Reiss.
Sunday Telegraph editor Dominic Lawson said: “I’m very pleased. He’s a very impressive operator with huge experience in the lobby for a number of newspapers. He was the first person we spoke to and the only person we spoke to.”
Hennessy started his career on the Express & Echo in Exeter, where he stayed for three years. He then did shifts on various nationals in London, before being offered a contract at The Sun under Kelvin MacKenzie in 1988, where he became City editor, with David Yelland as his number two.
He became a lobby journalist at the Daily Express before moving to the Evening Standard under Max Hastings.
He said: “It’s very exciting. I’ve never worked on a Sunday before and I’m looking forward to it.”
