Award-winning Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Anne Pickles (pictured) is joining her former editor at the title, Neil Hodgkinson, to work for Cumbrian Newspapers.
In June, the former Press Gazette UK feature writer of the year will become associate editor under Hodgkinson, who left the Post in March to become editorial director of the independent group. She will be responsible for improving news and features content while continuing to write.
Pickles, who won two awards at the 2004 Regional Press Awards, broke the story about body armour shortages in Iraq. She discovered that the first British soldier killed there had been ordered to hand over his life-saving armour before he was later shot dead.
Her investigation led to an apology from defence secretary, Geoff Hoon.
