Journalists will gather in Leeds to celebrate the centenary of a historic meeting which laid the foundations for the launch of the NUJ.
In 1906, around 200 journalists — who were commonly working six or seven day weeks of 80 to 90 hours — met at the Metropole Hotel to discuss forming the union. The Leeds meeting and another meeting in Manchester in the same year led to the holding of a national conference in 1907 in Birmingham, where the NUJ was officially launched.
Among those expected at the celebratory meeting on Thursday (19 October) were NUJ president Chris Morley, general secretary Jeremy Dear, local MPs and delegates from the Trades Union Congress and other unions.
