Now that really is distance learning

By Press Gazette

The new editor of Falkland Islands newspaper Penguin News has travelled 8,000 miles to attend a training course.

Jenny Cockwell made the long journey to Torquay in Devon to be trained by David Scott. He has twice visited the Falklands to teach journalists and was asked to return to train Cockwell.

He told Press Gazette: “I am so busy I could not spare the time to travel so Jenny has flown over here and is spending a couple of days with me in Torquay gaining some law and management training. “We are also looking at how to improve the Penguin News.”

Scott was launch editor of the free Daily News in Birmingham, seen as a forerunner of Associated’s free Metro titles. He has been running his editorial training company for 15 years.

Cockwell takes over as editor of the Penguin News from Lisa Riddell who has become manager of the Falklands’ radio station.
