Newsquest job cuts in Bury and Bolton

By Press Gazette

By Sarah Lagan

Newsquest has announced further redundancies as a result of the "challenging economic conditions which has impacted on the company’s advertising revenues".

Up to 12 jobs are to go in Bolton and Bury editorial, following the merging of several departments. Four of these will come from not filling existing vacancies.

Sport and photography in Bury will be axed and merged with the respective desks based in Bolton, with five jobs to go as a result.

Two or three jobs are to go in Bolton as the news features and commercial features are merged.

An editorial administration job is to go in Bolton and a reporter is being moved from Bury to Bolton. Volunteers will be considered.

NUJ FoC Dave Thomson said: "What has alarmed us is that management have said they can reject some people who have put in for voluntary redundancies which could mean there could be some compulsory redundancies. We will fight tooth and nail against and compulsory redundancies."

Jobs are also understood to be going at the Guardian series in Warrington and at the Wirral Globe series.

Newsquest would not comment on any of the redundancies.
