After almost a month of the Birmingham Evening Mail publishing the
same questions daily to Rover’s new owner Nanjing, the company has
finally broken its silence.
Under its new editor, Steve Dyson, the Mail has been demanding answers to 12 key questions for 32 days running.
They include the future of the Longbridge site and what local jobs could be created.
As
part of its No More Chinese Whispers campaign, the Mail published a
front-page splash with a headline in Mandarin, the boss’s own language,
and reporter Catherine Lillington delivered a Mail front page with the
questions to the Chinese Embassy.
All the questions have now been
answered, including how much Nanjing is investing, the amount of jobs
that will be created and the number of models planned for manufacture.
Dyson said: “This was down to the Mail’s campaign. We’ve had various MPs and council leaders, asking us to back off.
“We
told [them] that we will continue to publish these questions. If it
takes three years, it takes three years. We deal in transparency and
people will be hung out to dry if they don’t.”
