Internal promotions: Carter, left, replaces Murrin as editor of Good Food
BBC Good Food Magazine editor Orlando Murrin is moving upstairs to become editorial director of the BBC’s newly created food group.
Gillian Carter, deputy editor of Good Food, is to take his place as editor.
The group has been set up by BBC Magazines following the launch of Olive. Murrin will oversee the group’s strategy and launches as well as existing titles – Olive, BBC Good Food and one-shots such as BBC Good Food Pasta Cookbook and Vegetarian Magazine.
He said the BBC had ambitions to launch more titles in the food sector.
“We are always looking for opportunities in the food market. We were delighted with the launch of Olive. The signs are that it has been successful as well as very motivating and energising for BBC Magazines in general,” he said.
Murrin became editor of Good Food in 1997. Prior to that he was editor of Woman & Home, having also stood in as acting deputy editor on Cosmopolitan for six months. Since he joined, Good Food has seen six consecutive sales increases. Murrin said the highlight was being part of the explosion of interest in cooking and championing Jamie Oliver before he became a top chef.
“I have had by far the most wonderful six years of my career editing Good Food. It’s now nice to let someone else have such an exciting job,” he added.
Carter joined Good Food last year, having been editor of Family Circle at IPC, where she launched the Kids in the Kitchen campaign.
Meanwhile, Nicki Hill has been appointed food group publisher and joins from the Forward Group, where she was responsible for Tesco’s contract publishing business.
