Chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality Trevor Phillips paid
tribute to News International boss Rupert Murdoch at this year’s Race
in the Media Awards.
Phillips quoted Murdoch from earlier this
year when he said: “If you bring skilled people into the country it
would enrich the whole country and create a lot more jobs. I am
pro-immigrant.”
Phillips said: “More than any single action by a
politician, Mr Murdoch’s intervention killed the attempts to demonise
migrants stone dead.”
This year’s RIMA news award went to Tim
Samuels from BBC News. The documentary prize went to Who Killed PC
Blakelock by Films of Record and the national newspapers prize went to
Madeleine Bunting from The Guardian for Young, Muslim and British.
The
Yorkshire Post was named top regional newspaper. Vic Motune, from The
Voice, picked up the specialist magazine prize. Golly in the Cupboard,
from Radio Merseyside, won the radio factual prize.
