Setanta Sports has made its first big signing for its Scottish Premier League subscription TV programme, SPL Live.
The Dublin-based satellite broadcaster has hired BBC TV Scotland’s top soccer commentator and presenter, Rob Maclean, as its anchor presenter.
Maclean, who has been at BBC Scotland for 14 years after cutting his broadcasting teeth at NorthSound Radio in Aberdeen, is understood to have secured a £100,000-a-year deal.
Setanta, which won a £35m fouryear deal for live coverage of the SPL, is expected to announce further signings shortly as it seeks to hire a dozen key journalistic staff before the new season kicks off in less than two months.
Meanwhile, both Rangers and Celtic will be launching their own subscription TV channels in August after striking a deal with Setanta Sports.
