Fact
Sector: music
Publisher: Vinyl Factory
Print run: 20,000
Frequency: bimonthly from September
This magazine for music lovers is shaped like a seven-inch record to attract vinyl lovers. It is designed by Dan Moscrop and Paul Pensom. “The market is flooded with music magazines so our intention was to be original, creating a fanzine-style mag that people could relate to,” says Moscrop. “We’ve drawn inspiration from sources as varied as early Punk mags through to Cuban poster art.” Moscrop used Block and Neuzeit Grotesque fonts throughout the magazine. “Block gives a hand-printed feel in line with the fanzine style of the magazine and Neuziet is a more characterful sans than Helvetica or Akzidenz. It also works well at small sizes, leads tightly thanks to its shallow descenders and ascenders and tracks like a dream,” he says. The bold graphic pictures and strong colours reflect the magazine’s influences as well as making best use of the material.
“When we receive images they are often of a low resolution, from the internet or poor reproductions, but this is not critical given the nature of Fact’s aesthetic, indeed it actually compliments it, as everything is treated in a similar manner, from our own generated imagery to PR shots,” says Moscrop.
