The Belfast-based Irish News today launched an internet TV station.
The service, titled INTV, will be available on the newspaper’s website and will feature general, business, sport, religious affairs and entertainment news.
Though it began producing video news for its website last September, the News is the first Irish newspaper to launch such a dedicated “station”.
A number of Irish News journalists will present stories for the station which is jointly run by the production company Gate 49.
Editor Noel Doran called the move a “natural step” for the newspaper and said INTV would give further insight and detail to stories. He said: “Those not able to pick up a copy of the newspaper can still keep in touch with all the issues, and with INTV, will be able to enjoy in-depth programming and analysis, from sports right through to entertainment,”
Managing editor at Irish News, Dominic Fitzpatrick, said that while the newspaper’s product would stay the same, the station is a chance to change its presentation to meet modern demands. “As we move towards an internet based information era, the high quality of our product stays the same, but our presentation is constantly evolving and embracing new media,” he said. “The Irish News was one of the first newspapers to launch its own website and we are the first newspaper on this island to offer an online TV service.”
