A former broadsheet newspaper has been shortlisted for the first time to receive the British Press Awards Hugh Cudlipp prize for outstanding tabloid journalism.
The Independent – which switched from broadsheet to tabloid size in 2003 – entered for its work highlighting global warming and the problems facing the environment, and particularly the “concept” poster front pages it has produced on this issue.
The other newspapers on the Cudlipp shortlist are: the Daily Mail, for its National Memorial campaign to get a memorial for the 16,000 service men and women killed since World War Two; the Daily Mirror for its Penman and Sommerlad consumer champion page; The Sun for its popular science book Giant Leaps; and the News of the World for its Sarah’s Law anti-paedophile campaign.
The Cudlipp award is judged by a panel selected by the British Journalism Review. The other BPA categories are decided by panels of judges nominated by all the national newspapers and others chosen for their independence and experience.
This year’s British Press Awards, which will be held at Grosvenor House on 26 March, is the first for several years to involve every national newspaper group.
Press Gazette editor-in-chief and chairman of the judges Tony Loynes said of the judging process: “This year more than 130 judges took part in the awards, less than 40 per cent of whom are employed by a national newspaper.
The rest are respected industry figures whose views and reader experiences add enormously to the credibility, integrity and independence of the awards.”
The visual awards finalists announced this week are: Cartoonist of the year: Peter Brookes, The Times; Dave Brown, The Independent; Michael Heath, Mail on Sunday; Mac, Daily Mail; Matt Pritchett, Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph.
Photographer of the year: Charlie Bibby, Financial Times; James Clarke, The Sun; Ian Jones, Daily Telegraph; Richard Pohle, The Times; Andrew Stenning, Daily Mirror.
