New York Times to boost presence
The New York Times is to reinforce its Asian and European presence after gaining sole ownership of the International Herald Tribune. A memo to foreign staff said changes would include a 24-hour news cycle and news operation in New York, more staff in Tokyo, Hong Kong and Geneva and more stringers.
Hachette offices
Staff at Hachette Filipacchi UK are moving to new offices at 64 North Row, London, in March – the company’s first headquarters since Hachette Filipacchi UK was established last August. Hachette’s titles include Elle, Red, B and Sugar.
Mail rebuts claim
The Daily Mail has sent a letter to the lawyers of British Horseracing Board chairman Peter Savill rebutting allegations of misreporting in an article by Channel 4 racing pundit John McCririck about Savill’s motives in the BHB’s decision to increase its revenues.
Political posts
Guardian Unlimited has appointed Tom Happold, a senior broadcast journalist on BBC1’s Ten O’Clock News, as editor of its politics site. He replaces Julian Glover, now assistant news editor (politics) on The Guardian.
Telegraph sorry
The Sunday Telegraph this week apologised to Harrods boss Mohamed Al Fayed for running a false story last May alleging he was involved in a plot to supply terrorists with enriched uranium. It has agreed to make a substantial payment to the Dodi Fayed Charitable Foundation. Al Fayed claimed in a right of reply the newspaper had a vendetta against him and the story was a hoax.
RI:SE suffers fall
Channel 4 breakfast programme RI:SE has suffered disruption to its 20 January relaunch, following the abrupt resignation of Mark Durden-Smith. The presenter survived the culling last month that was part of a bid to boost the programme’s low ratings.
Greenock error
In its report of 20 December, Press Gazette wrongly stated that journalist Colin Hogarth, charged with possession of indecent photographs of children, worked for the Greenock Evening Telegraph. Hogarth works for Thomson Newspapers, which publishes the Sunday Post, Dundee Courier and Evening Telegraph, Dundee. We apologise for any embarrassment our report may have caused.
