Former Surrey Comet reporter Nick Hopkins has been made The Guardian’s home news editor, taking over from Ed Pilkington who has been made New York correspondent After starting his career at the Comet, Hopkins worked at the Wolverhampton-based Express and Star before joining The Daily Mail as Midlands reporter in 1994.
After four years at the Mail, where he became New York correspondent, he joined The Guardian as a news reporter in 1998 and worked as crime correspondent, deputy foreign editor and then deputy home editor.
Merope Mills, currently editor of the paper’s Friday film and music section, has been given a big step up and put in charge of Weekend magazine — taking over from Katherine Viner who has been made features editor.
Mills joined The Guardian in 2000 as a writer and assistant on Media Guardian after winning the feature writer of the year award at the Guardian Student Media Awards in 1999.
She went on to edit the Office Hours section and was made features commissioning editor in 2001, assistant features editor in June 2003 and then editor of Film and Music in January 2004.
