Surrey Comet deputy sports editor Jo Halpin has won the seventh Chris Moore memorial regional hockey writer of the year award.
The judges praised Halpin for having a “nose for news, writes a lively feature and injects considerable life into her general round-ups”.
Halpin was delighted to receive the honour and a cheque for £500, which is sponsored by The Daily Telegraph, at the annual Hockey Writers awards in Peterborough, but criticised the lack of hockey coverage in the national press.
“The sport throws up as many good stories as other sports and I was disappointed the women’s World Cup in Australia was not picked up more.”
Halpin started her career on the Newmarket Journal before joining the Comet as a sub-editor.
Winner of the amateur section Paul Raymer, who has covered hockey for the Birmingham Post for more than 30 years, urged hockey clubs to work with newspapers to raise the games profile.
