The Daily Mirror is understood to have put on some 200,000 sales on Monday after an exclusive first interview with Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond following his 300mph car crash
Deputy editor Conor Hanna said: "Obviously, there was a lot of interest from rival media organisations, but Richard has always taken his role as a columnist on the paper very seriously and wanted to give the story to the Mirror. That was the major factor in securing the scoop."
The story was advertised on TV on Sunday night and the first edition was "spoofed" to ensure rivals did not lift the quotes.
