Future is planning to launch its first weekly consumer title next year.
The
move, reportedly spurred by Future's desire for a better standing in
supermarkets, is the first time the Bath-based publisher has ventured
beyond a three week frequency title. It is expected to be in a special
interest field, possibly a car title.
The move is a surprise
given that earlier this month the company announced it was scaling back
its expansion plans, and replaced its chief executive with someone who
had no publishing experience, after it announced pre tax losses of
£12.1 million in its interim results.
Future was barred from
buying the entire Highbury magazine business last year by the OFT on
monopoly grounds – a move that would have made it the third biggest
publisher in the UK, in terms of circulation. This year, two technology
sites, a daily music, film and TV site and a poker magazine for women
are in the pipeline.
