Women’s glossy Red magazine has been recruiting from the lads’ mags sector and hired Front’s senior designer Paul Browning.
The appointment also coincides with the promotion of Red features editor Vicky Harper to deputy editor.
Browning, who is due to leave Front on 19 May, said he was looking for a complete change.
“It is very different. Red is a big-selling glossy and it’s at the opposite end of the spectrum to Front. I was looking for something a bit more glossy and respected.
“I couldn’t go home and show a copy of Front to my grandma,” he added.
Browning has worked on Front for nearly two years, having previously worked on the Daily Express Saturday magazine. His departure coincides with new ownership of Front following the takeover of its founding publisher Cabal Communications by Highbury House.
Harper began her career in journalism in 1993 as a features writer on the Daily Express before moving to The Mail on Sunday and freelancing for You magazine. She has also contributed to the Evening Standard and Elle.
Harper will take over from Red’s assistant editor Andrea Childs, who has been standing in since the departure of former deputy editor Hero Brown last August.
Red editor Trish Halpin said: “Vicky stood out from the crowd, not only because of her intuitive understanding of the Red reader, but also her exciting ideas for taking the magazine forward.”
