Tanith Carey: “a major signing”
National Enquirer publisher American Media has continued its raid on Britain’s nationals, confirming this week that it had hired 10 tabloid journalists.
In August it announced that it had headhunted Sun associate editor (news) Paul Field and claimed it was after 30 other top execs.
Field is now understood to be involved in hiring, but he can’t sign up News International staff because of a no-poaching deal.
Tanith Carey, the Daily Mirror ‘s US editor (features), is the latest confirmed signing along with Mail on Sunday assistant night editor Mike O’Brien. Others are understood to be awaiting visa confirmation.
An American Media source said: “Tanith is a major signing because of her executive experience and on the road experience at the Daily Mirror .
There are now 10 people including designers, reporters, feature writers and other executives from national tabloid newspapers who have all signed contracts.”
American Media has yet to reveal exactly why it is hiring so many Brits.
A source said the new people will “work on American Media’s existing operations and look at new launches”.
Carey has been Daily Mirror US editor (features) since June 2003, working with her husband, Anthony Harwood, who is US editor (news).
She has been at the Mirror for 10 years, first as a news reporter, then as a senior feature writer, women’s editor and then features editor.
