The Guardian’s home and foreign editors, Harriet Sherwood and Ed Pilkington, are to swop roles and Media Guardian editor Janine Gibson is to get the newly created position of G3 editor.
Gibson will have overall responsibility for the paper’s media, education, society and science/online supplements, published from Monday to Thursday, operating at department head level.
In her new role, Gibson will work alongside the editors of the four supplements to ensure the paper “continues to deliver the best editorial product in the market to these groups and to the paper’s classified advertisers”, says Guardian Newspapers.
Gibson will also become editor-in-chief of Media Guardian, alongside a new editor for the section.
Sherwood and Pilkington, who have been in their current positions 10 and five years respectively, will take up their new roles from the beginning of June.
Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger said: “Harriet and Ed are both hugely experienced and respected editors, with years of desk editing under their belts.
“With the end of the war it seemed a good point to switch their roles, giving each of them a new canvas to work on.”
The paper is also to make changes in various foreign postings. Jonathan Watts is to become the newspaper’s China correspondent and John Hooper is moving from Germany to become Italy correspondent for both The Guardian and The Economist.
