The South Wales Echo played the role of cupid when reader Natasha Williams decided to propose to her boyfriend on February 29, writes Dominic Ponsford.
The hairdresser approached the paper with a romantic message for partner Lawrence James which journalists ran as a page lead under the headline: “Babes, Will You Marry Me?” Reporter David James was given the unusual assignment of delivering the Echo to car salesman James at work and photographer Andrew Davies was there to capture his reaction on camera.
Fortunately his response was yes.
Williams said: “I’m delighted. I was so nervous before. I just thought that putting it in the paper would be different and more of a public statement.”
The couple, who met when James was having his hair cut, have been together for two years and have a daughter, Shayla.
Alastair Milburn, editor of the Trinity Mirror title, said: “We were happy to help Natasha out – although on Saturday morning I was as nervous as she was!”
