Newspapers being delivered from distribution centres in Yorkshire on Sunday night were delayed after the police swooped on vans and found them to be overloaded and unroadworthy.
Twenty-one vans or lorries were stopped, 16 of which were carrying newspapers, near the Eastfield Industrial Estate, near Scarborough. Nine were prevented from continuing their journey for a range of offences, including overloading and having faulty brakes, steering, suspension or tyres. One driver was charged with a drink driving offence.
Sergeant Chris Carlton, from North Yorkshire Police, who co-ordinated the swoop, said he realised that some newspaper deliveries were delayed but that was an inevitable consequence of the operation.
