News of the World reporter Dave McGee still faces the threat of a criminal record that could scupper his career as an investigative reporter, writes Dominic Ponsford.
McGee, pictured right, appeared in court just before Christmas charged with the obscure offence of taking a camera into a prison. His exposé of security failings at Woodhill maximum security prison prompted a widespread review of standards throughout the prison service. Despite this he is now set to stand trial in April.
Judges have previously ruled that journalists are allowed to use subterfuge when it is in the public interest. A criminal record could make it impossible for McGee to work undercover in future.
